Movie review: Equilibrium

I watched the 2002 movie Equilibrium some years ago, and society is sadly and worryingly turning more and more like it.

Everything must be perfectly measured, in place and “accurate”. No divergence. No feeling. No objection. No colors and no actual life. (Reminds me of another movie, The Giver from 2014.)

Here are just a few examples of its correspondence to today’s world:

Oh, you mustn’t be -phobic. You must be inclusive. You have a bias, you mustn’t be biased. You must be diverse and represent all humans. You are not treating them exactly equal, you must do this. You must think about the impact of your actions. They are marginalized, you must give the marginalized a voice. You aren’t kind, you must be nice and kind. It’s offensive, you can’t say that. That’s a micro-aggression, apologize! You can’t speak for someone else! You can’t speak on someone else’s experience! Stay in your lane! You’re privileged so your views don’t matter. You’re not an expert so you can’t speak on this. You must listen to the experiences of other people. You are deflecting, stop deflecting. You are an -ist.

…GAAAAAAAAAH! ENOUGH!

If it continues like this then society is going to implode on itself.

But it’s not too late.

Yes, what happened to the arts? What happened to wholesome resilience through self-support? What happened to life itself? Where is she?

What happened to profound, moving and interesting movies, not required to frame a certain ideology?

What happened to curiosity? What happened to innocence? What happened to freedom? What happened to joy?

What happened to conversations?

What happened to truth?

What happened to the path of our universal sense of humanity that we seemed to traverse only a few years ago?

What happened to live and let live?

Hello..?

Is there anybody there?
