Diversity and multiculturalism presumes that all cultures are good or equally good, when they aren’t, depending on which frame of reference one starts from. Some cultures or cultural aspects are a matter of taste and personal (in this case national) inclinations, while others are bad on a moral, universal or human level for example.
It’s also quite strange that in some parts of the world, it is strongly commanded to respect their cultures, while in western countries, I find that their customs, cultures and traditions must be set aside and replaced by multiculturalism and diversity. That is the opposite of those things. Each country has a basic right to its national identity and expression, as well as cultural cohesion, heritage and integrity.
To allow that basic right to all countries, that is the true diversity, multiculturalism and equality.
A country has a right to say “no thanks“, just like a person has (provided it actually reflects the will of a country’s people and isn’t something said to deprive them of what they want).
And I think this would be a very beautiful world to live in. A world in which we all both allowed and respected our differences, from a distance, and that if one doesn’t like life in one place, one can move around the world and seek it in another. Ever heard of the word assimilation?! Yes, I may raise some eyebrows with that word, but after honest consideration, I don’t think it is as bad as it sounds.
“United by our differences.” That sentence has meanings deeper than what is plain. If it means that we should blindly have to accept and take on each other’s differences, then there will remain no differences.
“Not my cup of tea” – “not our way of life”.
